Advertising Standards Authority
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) regulates UK advertising across all media.
Regulator - a body that is not part of the government but will follow government's guidelines or laws. There is a regulator for TV and radio (Ofcom), for newspaper and magazines (IPSO)… for schools (Ofsted), for energy companies, etc. Each have different amounts of power. Sometimes they are there to deal with or investigate complaints from the public.
The ASA regulates:
- Magazines and newspapers
- Television shopping channels
- TV and radio Posters
- Cinema commercials
- Direct mail Internet ads (website marketing, ads in social media spaces, aid-for search ads)
- Leaflets and brochures
- Sales promotions
